The core intent and ambition of our Careers programme:
Young people are faced with a complex set of demands when preparing for their future careers. Woldgate School aims to ensure that students are self-confident, skilled and career-ready. This is achieved through a comprehensive programme of carefully planned activities that enable pupils to grow and flourish as themselves as they decide, and embark on, pathways that are right for them beyond their school experience; and for them to be able to manage their careers and sustain employability throughout their lives. Our programme starts in Year 7 through Year 13, and is based on the nationally recognised Gatsby Benchmarks.
The programme follows the eight Gatsby Benchmarks of Good Career Guidance which are:
- A stable careers programme
- Learning from career and labour market information
- Addressing the needs of each pupil
- Linking curriculum learning to careers
- Encounters with employers and employees
- Experiences of workplaces
- Encounters with further and higher education
- Personal guidance
We review all our activity throughout the year on Compass +, with governors, and the local LEP which supports reviews and ensures we are follow all eight of Gatsby benchmarks to the highest standard.

Why these sectors, in our local area?
Labour demand across the energy and infrastructure sectors will be significant, totalling around 760,000 by 2024. This includes 160,000 new jobs and replacing 600,000 people due to retirements.
New industries and technologies are emerging, adding to already significant demand for engineering skills. 203,000 people with Level 3+ engineering skills are needed every year to meet demand. Currently 40% of manufacturers say 40% of their workforce is above the age of 50, and while they are keen to keep hold of these workers – who often possess specialist skills – there is a growing need to attract the next generation.
Manufacturing is the production of goods from the beginnings as raw materials to after sales services. Manufacturing today is usually high-tech production on a large scale. Most manufacturing processes are automated to ensure products meet quality standards and can be produced in large volumes to meet demand. Advanced manufacturing involves the use of technology to improve products and processes. Currently 40% of manufacturers say 40% of their workforce is above the age of 50, and while they are keen to keep hold of these workers – who often possess specialist skills – there is a growing need to attract the next generation.

Why this sector, in our local area?
The food & agriculture sector involves the cultivation of animals, plants, and other life forms to enable us to manufacture food and drink. Think livestock – dairy cows, cattle for beef, sheep for wool and lamb, pigs and poultry. Think crops – wheat, oats, peas, oilseed rape and grass for your livestock.
To meet future challenges of food security and climate change, the sector will be using more innovative and automated technologies, which will drive demand for engineers, scientists and mathematicians – the sector will need highly skilled individuals to overcome these challenges
Around 133,000 new jobs will be needed in Food Manufacturing between 2014 and 2024 across the UK, more than any other manufacturing sector.
British farmers and growers produce 64% of all the food we eat in the UK and in the future this amount will need to increase to feed a growing population.

Please see below a number of ways you can support young people in their early personal development and career search:
• Attend parent’s information evenings in year 9 and 11 so that you understand the next steps and opportunities available to your child.
• Encourage them to explore the different options available at 14, 16 and 18 such as apprenticeships, college, sixth form, degree apprenticeships or university.
• Encourage your child to consider which of their subjects they enjoy, and how this might link to future careers.
• Discuss their next steps with them – guide them to make realistic and aspirational choices.
• Help dispel common misconceptions of the workplace. For example, that certain jobs are for men or women, that apprenticeships are only for practical vocations like engineering, or that students need to wait until they start looking for work before they gain experience of the wider world of work.
• Help them explore the jobs and training opportunities that are available locally, or through the ‘Find an apprenticeship’ section of the government website.
• Encourage your son or daughter to use local Labour Market Information to support their career choices. You will find a link to the LMI Humber website below.
• Encourage them to develop their skills and qualities by participating in extra-curricular activities (personal development)
• Encourage them to attend school, be punctual and wear the correct uniform – this is preparing them for the workplace
We are always interested in making new connections and links with local and national employers. Here are just some of the ways you can get involved, we are a forward thinking team and always looking for new ways to strengthen our offering.
